14.

Peter and I sat down at a table on the opposite side of the bar as Melissa and Jeff – at my request. I still had a clear line of vision to them, but I didn't want to be close enough to hear whatever disgusting things were coming out of their mouths. By the look of it, they seemed like they were having a really good time together. Melissa kept twirling her hair – a sure sign that she's interested in a guy – and laughing at everything Jeff said. If Ken was still at the bar, I'd bet him ten dollars that they ended up having sex. And knowing Ken, he wouldn't have taken that bet because he'd agree with me.

“So what's it like being a nurse at a big hospital?” Peter asked me. “It must get crazy sometimes.”

“Yeah, it can get pretty wild,” I replied and took a sip of the appletini Peter bought for me. “But overall I love it. I always wanted to be a nurse.”

“Give me an example. Like, what's the craziest thing that's happened there over, say, the past few weeks.”

Of course you would ask that. Not the craziest thing of all time, but of the last few weeks. Maybe I should just make something up. No, I'll be honest. There's no reason to lie, just because I don't want to think about Trent.

“Well,” I replied, “a guy came in with a gunshot wound to his shoulder a few weeks ago. He was wearing really expensive clothing that was covered in blood. As it turned out, the guy was a doctor from LA who single-handedly stopped a gun-wielding maniac from killing a bunch of people at a hotel. Pretty crazy, right?”

“Wow, that is crazy!”

It's too bad the same handsome, charming doctor happens to be a liar – and a cheater.

“You must get some craziness in here from time to time,” I said. “What's the wildest thing that you've seen over the past few weeks?”

“Hmmm, let's see. Well, there was this one guy. He came in and...”

My mind wandered while Peter talked. I couldn't stop thinking about Trent. How could I be so wrong about him? How could it be that I didn't notice a single red flag? Even looking back, I still couldn't think of any obvious warning signs that Trent might've been a two-timing liar.

I felt bad that I wasn't focused on Peter. We continued to talk for a while but my mind kept turning off Pete Road and driving down Trent Avenue. Peter really was a nice guy and definitely cute. But I just didn't feel any sparks flying. Not a one. At Melissa and Jeff's table, it looked like sparks were flying all over the place. They were making out like crazy, occasionally coming up for air just long enough to take another shot before getting right back to it.

“The appletinis are really good here, aren't they?” Peter asked.

“Sooo good,” I replied.

“Can I buy you another one? You look like you've just about killed that one.
